Claim: The classified U.S. Air Force facility Area 51 in Nevada houses crashed alien spacecraft (often tied to the 1947 Roswell incident) and extraterrestrial technology or bodies that the government has covered up for decades.

Origins: Area 51's existence was only officially acknowledged by the CIA in 2013 documents, which fed suspicion for decades. Roswell's 1947 "flying disc" was actually debris from a classified high-altitude balloon project (Project Mogul) designed to detect Soviet nuclear tests.

Why it's false: Declassified records confirm Area 51 was used to test secret aircraft (U-2, SR-71 Blackbird, stealth prototypes), whose exotic appearance and performance plausibly explain many "UFO" sightings from the era.
