Overlooking the university town of Heidelberg and the Neckar River, this partially ruined Renaissance castle has inspired poets and painters for centuries.

History

Construction began around the 13th century, with major expansions in the 16th and 17th centuries. Lightning strikes and wars, including the Thirty Years' War and French invasions, left much of the castle in ruins, which were never fully rebuilt — giving it its distinctive romantic character.

• The Great Vat, one of the largest wine barrels in the world
• The German Pharmacy Museum, housed within the castle
• Panoramic views over Heidelberg's Old Town and the Neckar valley

Visiting Tips

A funicular railway connects the Old Town to the castle, saving a steep climb. The castle gardens (Schlossgarten) are a pleasant spot to relax after touring the interior.
