Reptilian Elite Theory
Claim: Shape-shifting reptilian humanoids from another world or dimension secretly control humanity, having infiltrated the ranks of world leaders, royalty, and celebrities, who can supposedly shift back to reptilian form and are seen by some believers as the origin of ancient "dragon" and "serpent" myths.
Origins: Popularized primarily by British conspiracy theorist David Icke starting in the 1990s, building on earlier UFO-contactee subcultures and pseudo-esoteric ideas.
Why it's false: No verifiable evidence — photographic, biological, or documentary — has ever been produced. The theory is unfalsifiable by design (any denial or normal human behavior is framed as concealment). Scholars of conspiracy culture note strong overlaps with antisemitic "hidden ruling class" tropes repackaged in science-fiction language, which is one reason the theory is treated with particular concern by researchers of extremism.
Status: Considered fringe even within conspiracy communities, but persistent online due to its vivid, meme-friendly imagery.
