The Black Forest

Covering a mountainous region in southwestern Germany, the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) is famed for dense pine woods, folklore, and traditional crafts.

History

The forest takes its name from the thick, dark canopy of conifers that early travelers found almost impenetrable. It has long been associated with fairy tales, including stories collected by the Brothers Grimm, and is the birthplace of the cuckoo clock, first made here in the 18th century.

Visiting Tips
