Zugspitze: Germany's Highest Peak

Zugspitze

At 2,962 meters, the Zugspitze is Germany's tallest mountain, straddling the border with Austria in the Wetterstein range near the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

History

The summit was first climbed in 1820 by a survey team. Today, three cable cars from Germany and Austria carry visitors to the top, including the Seilbahn Zugspitze, which set a world record as the cable car with the highest support-free span.

Visiting Tips

Weather at the summit changes quickly, so pack warm layers even in summer. Combining the ascent with a walk around the Eibsee makes for a full day trip from Munich.
